Why DOOH Outperforms Every Other Advertising Channel — The Data

Industry: Digital Out-of-Home Advertising
Model: Venue-based indoor DOOH vs traditional and digital channels
Region: Global

Every advertiser faces the same fundamental challenge: how do you reach a real person, hold their attention long enough for the message to land, and make sure they actually remember what they saw?

Most advertising channels solve one of these problems well. Television reaches large audiences but loses them the moment they pick up their phone or leave the room. Social media delivers precision targeting but competes with an infinite scroll of content that buries most ads within seconds. Online display is measurable but plagued by fraud, invisible impressions, and banner blindness that renders most placements invisible.

DOOH solves all three problems simultaneously — and the data proves it.

Discovery: What the Research Actually Shows

The most comprehensive analysis of advertising effectiveness across media channels comes from Solomon Partners' US Major Media CPM Comparison, published in 2025. The findings are unambiguous.

Out-of-Home advertising delivers the highest ad recall of any media channel — 84 to 86% — outperforming every alternative in the study. Television achieves approximately 50%. Social media reaches 57%. Online display trails at 46%.

The reason is not creative quality or budget. It is context. A person sitting in a café, restaurant, or gym cannot scroll past a screen on the wall. The message is delivered in full, in a distraction-free environment, to an audience that has chosen to spend time in that space. The attention is real because the situation makes it unavoidable.

The fraud problem in digital advertising is significant and consistently underreported. According to industry estimates, up to 21% of online display impressions are generated by bots, non-viewable placements, or content that loads outside the visible screen area. Advertisers pay for these impressions without any audience ever seeing their message.

DOOH has no equivalent problem. A screen in a physical venue either plays or it does not. Proof-of-play systems log every impression in real time, giving advertisers complete transparency on exactly when and where their content was displayed.

Cost Efficiency: The CPM Reality

Television primetime CPM ranges from $40 to $60 per thousand impressions. Online display ranges from $3 to $10, but the effective CPM — adjusted for fraudulent and non-viewable impressions — is significantly higher than the headline figure suggests.

DOOH consistently delivers verified impressions at a fraction of broadcast media costs, with recall rates that outperform every alternative channel. The combination of low cost per verified impression and high recall makes it the most efficient channel available for brands that want measurable results.

"The proof that out-of-home media is an essential component for achieving superior brand impact could not come at a more opportune time."

Kantar x Clear Channel Outdoor Study, July 2025

A five-year study by Clear Channel Outdoor and Kantar confirmed that OOH outperforms CTV and digital channels in ad awareness, brand favorability, and purchase intent — with a 13.3% higher increase in Ad Awareness compared to digital media and TV.
